Dambusters Raid
The night of 16 - 17th of May 1943 saw the raid on three strategically important dams located in the Ruhr Valley, the industrial heartland of Germany.
This year is the 80th anniversary of the raid, which was carried out by 19- Lancaster bombers of the newly formed 617-Sqn, which consisted of 133 aircrew led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, of which 53 were killed and 3 taken prisoner. The bombing of the dams was a huge successful and the Squadron, which is still in existence today flying F35's from RAF Marham will be forever known as 'The Dambusters'.
