The Bridge for Heroes is continuing to make a difference to isolated members of the Armed Forces Community through its successful Project In Reach programme.

The project, which is funded with thanks to the Veterans’ Foundation, focuses on reaching members of the Armed Forces Community who may be experiencing loneliness and isolation and who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to access the support available at The Bridge for Heroes.

Rather than waiting for people to come through the doors, Project In Reach takes support out into the community. Through regular contact, welfare support, home visits and opportunities to reconnect with others, the project is helping people take those first steps towards feeling less isolated and becoming part of a community again.

From isolation to connection

One beneficiary had become increasingly isolated and was spending much of their time alone. Although they were aware of The Bridge for Heroes, travelling to the centre felt like a significant step and they were initially reluctant to engage with support.

Through Project In Reach, a member of the team was able to make contact and gradually build a relationship based on trust.

Initially, the contact was simply an opportunity to talk and have a cup of tea. Over time, those regular conversations began to make a real difference.

The beneficiary became more comfortable engaging with the team and, as their confidence grew, they were introduced to some of the activities and opportunities available through The Bridge for Heroes. What began with a simple conversation eventually became a pathway back into the community.

They are now engaging more regularly with others and taking part in activities, with a noticeable reduction in their feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Making a difference, one conversation at a time

For The Bridge for Heroes, this is exactly why Project In Reach is so important.

Loneliness can have a significant impact on wellbeing, and members of the Armed Forces Community can sometimes find themselves isolated following changes in circumstances, loss of contact with former colleagues or difficulties adjusting to life outside the Armed Forces.

Project In Reach provides an important link between those individuals and the support available.

Sometimes, the biggest step is simply knowing that someone is there.

The impact of the project can be seen in the small but significant changes- someone opening the door, agreeing to a conversation, reconnecting with others, attending an activity or eventually feeling confident enough to visit The Bridge for Heroes.

Each of these steps can represent a significant move away from loneliness and isolation.

Reaching those who need us most

The Bridge for Heroes is incredibly grateful to the Veterans’ Foundation for its support in funding Project In Reach and helping the charity extend its reach across the Armed Forces Community.

The project is helping ensure that support isn’t limited to those who are already able to access The Bridge. Instead, the team can reach out to those who may otherwise remain isolated and ensure they know that help, friendship and a community are available.

If you are part of the Armed Forces Community and are struggling with loneliness, isolation or simply finding things difficult at the moment, please reach out to The Bridge for Heroes.

You don’t have to wait until things reach crisis point, and you don’t have to face things alone. Sometimes, the first step is simply having a conversation.

The Bridge for Heroes is here to listen; support and help you reconnect.
